What is a Green Slip
Before you can register any vehicle in NSW, you must buy a Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance policy, commonly known as a Green Slip.
A Green Slip protects drivers from liability if they cause injury or death to others in a motor crash.
This coverage extends to the driver and all third parties involved, including drivers, pedestrians, passengers, cyclists and motorcyclists, regardless of fault (unless you are charged with a serious driving offence).
The CTP Scheme covers injury costs caused by your NSW registered vehicle in the following scenarios:
- To you and to others if the crash occurred in NSW.
- To others if the crash occurred outside of NSW.
Find out what can be claimed.
Coverage for your injuries from crashes outside NSW depends on the local laws of the crash location. In the event of a death, close relatives may claim certain expenses.
Drivers facing serious driving offence charges related to the crash may not be eligible for loss of income or medical expenses under the NSW CTP Scheme.
Types of Green Slips
You can generally choose between a 12-month insurance policy or a 6-month insurance policy with other options available if you're a fleet owner or motor dealer.
To maintain vehicle registration, a new Green Slip must be purchased before the current one expires. Driving without an up-to-date insurance policy can lead to a fine.
Vehicles with limited road access such as all-terrain vehicles, historic vehicles, certain recreational and purpose-built vehicles, might qualify for conditional registration or an unregistered vehicle permit.
Exclusions
Green Slips do not cover the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle or the costs to repair or replace other property in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
