SIRA prosecutes $135,000 CTP insurance fraud in ongoing crackdown

28 May 2025

SIRA has successfully prosecuted Issa Abid for defrauding the Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance scheme over $135,000.

The prosecution sends a clear message that undermining the sustainability and fairness of the CTP scheme designed to provide financial support to those genuinely injured in a motor crash will not be tolerated.

An investigation uncovered that Abid submitted 33 false certificates and declarations to a CTP insurer claiming unemployment to receive weekly loss-of-income benefits totalling $135,166.01 over a period of two and a half years, whilst remaining employed throughout.

Abid was sentenced at the Downing Centre Local Court on 8 May 2025 after pleading guilty to dishonestly obtaining payments by deception under Section 192E of the Crimes Act 1900.

The court found that a custodial sentence was warranted, and Abid was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, to be served in the community via an Intensive Correction Order. He was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of $12,620.49 and to submit fingerprints to police. The fraudulently obtained funds were repaid by Abid before the sentencing.

SIRA welcomes the outcome, which emphasises the importance of deterrence in fraud cases involving publicly funded schemes where costs are ultimately borne by road users through insurance premiums. The scheme depends upon honesty and trust to operate effectively.

This case follows a series of successful prosecutions against individuals and businesses for scheme fraud. It forms part of SIRA’s broader regulatory enforcement strategy and an ongoing commitment to protecting the integrity of the NSW insurance schemes in its oversight.
