Special conditions imposed on Aldi Stores workers compensation licence

SIRA has renewed the workers compensation self-insurer licence for Aldi Stores (A Limited Partnership) (Aldi) following its recent renewal application. The licence is for the period 28 February 2023 to 28 February 2026.
SIRA has, however, imposed special conditions on the Aldi workers compensation self-insurer licence in response to poor compliance and claims management practices.
A number of health checks, self-audits and an independent auditor engaged by SIRA over the past two years have identified issues with Aldi’s liability determinations, initial stakeholder engagement, claims management and data quality.
A remediation plan has been put in place with improvements in Aldi’s overall performance, however the insurer is still not meeting SIRA’s performance expectations of a self-insurer.
In response, SIRA has imposed some Special Licence Conditions in addition to the standard conditions. The special conditions are:
- The licensee must adhere to all actions and areas of improvement identified in the Remediation Plan submitted to the Authority in January 2023 by the timescales within that plan to continuously improve compliance in both injury and claims management.
- The licensee must provide the Authority with a monthly update on the progress and implementation of the Remediation Plan within 10 business days of the end of each month until the Authority confirms that the Remediation Plan has been completed to a satisfactory standard.
- The Licensee must continue to implement the quality assurance plan in place to monitor the effectiveness of its Remediation Plan and claims management compliance and performance.
- The licensee must provide the Authority with a monthly quality assurance report to demonstrate the effectiveness of claims performance improvements within 10 business days from the end of each month until otherwise advised by the Authority.
- These special conditions apply to any variation or extension of the licensee’s Remediation Program approved by the Authority in writing from time to time.
SIRA is closely supervising Aldi’s performance and compliance with the licence conditions.
