Over the past few weeks we’ve seen positive progress across the schemes SIRA regulates, with several important initiatives advancing. We remain committed to sharing insights and working closely with stakeholders to ensure our regulatory approach supports scheme sustainability and continues to deliver meaningful outcomes for the people of NSW.
I'm pleased to share SIRA’s review of claims management within the NSW Workers Compensation Scheme. The review was conducted in response to a Standing Committee on Law & Justice of the NSW Parliament recommendation. Our findings highlight the need for a cultural shift towards more person-centred practices, including more tailored support for people with a claim (particularly those with psychological injuries), clearer guidance, and a reduction in red tape. These changes are essential to strengthening support and driving better outcomes for scheme participants.
We've also published findings from the independent evaluation of Workplace Rehabilitation Providers. Conducted by Urbis in partnership with Monash University, the report offers valuable insights and recommendations to strengthen return to work outcomes across the scheme.
In keeping with our regulatory approach, SIRA has taken enforcement action against 2 NSW self-insurers for breaches of workers compensation obligations. Liverpool City Council was fined $20,000 for failing to notify the regulator of a significant matter in a timely manner, while Tomago Aluminium received $31,000 in penalties for claims management obligation breaches and failure to comply with a notice to produce documents by the due date. These actions reflect our ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and compliance across the system.

Liverpool City Council has been penalised for failing to promptly report the loss of a hard drive containing workers compensation data, breaching its self-insurer obligations.
Motor Accident Guidelines version 10
Version 10 of the Motor Accident Guidelines (the Guidelines) commenced on 15 September 2025. The new Guidelines can be found on the SIRA website, along with a summary of changes.
