Employer supervision

SIRA supervises the employers of NSW using a risk-based approach to regulation.

How SIRA supervises employers

SIRA's supervision focuses on a variety of workers compensation obligations, ranging from policy requirements through to recovery at work.

This is done by developing employer capability, supervision and enforcement activity.

Employer classification

Employers are classified to ensure that supervision and response activities are proportional to the risk. Classification is based on a range of factors, including:

  • employer size
  • industry
  • insurance arrangements, compliance history, claims history
  • premiums and wages
  • insurance model
  • return to work performance.

SIRA employs customised monitoring and conducts both proactive and responsive supervision activities, targeting employers where these activities will have the greatest impact.

Compliance

To ensure compliance, SIRA uses a range of tools as part of its regulatory approach.

Inspectors may visit employers to ensure they have effective return to work systems in place and are complying with their workplace injury management obligations. This in turn will achieve optimum results for a safe and durable return to work for people with an injury.
