Statement on builder collapse

Homeowners in NSW impacted by recent builder failures may be protected through the home building compensation scheme.

Where to go for help

If your home is incomplete or has defects that your builder cannot address, you can make a claim through the icare Home Building Compensation Fund. To do this, you should complete the Claim Form for Homeowners on the icare website.

You can contact icare on (02) 9216 3224 or [email protected] if you need help making a claim.

If you have any outstanding building work or funding, you can contact NSW Fair Trading on 13 32 20 or via their website.

About

Home building compensation is a last resort insurance if you are faced with incomplete or defective building work where the builder becomes insolvent, dies, disappears or has their licence suspended.

icare HBCF is the insurer responsible for home building compensation in NSW.

If your builder is under external administration, homeowners with valid home building compensation cover may be entitled to claim at present if their building work is incomplete or has defects.

Should the voluntary administration lead to the successful restructuring of these builders, concerns about incomplete or defective building work can then be pursued through the business directly.

You can use the SIRA HBC Check to see if there is valid home building compensation cover for your residential building work. You can search by property address, the certificate number (if known), or by the name or licence number of the contractor.

As the regulator of the home building compensation scheme, SIRA is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that impacted homeowners are made aware of their entitlements.
