SIRA takes actions to ensure CCI workers compensation policy holders remain compliant

26 June 2023

In response to the announcement that Catholic Church Insurance (CCI) will cease offering new or renew existing workers compensation insurance policies from 29 June 2023, the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) has taken steps to ensure affected NSW policy holders and workers continue to be protected through appropriate workers compensation insurance provisions.

SIRA Chief Executive, Adam Dent said that SIRA is working with CCI and policy holders to ensure a seamless transition.

“SIRA has taken steps to ensure that employers and workers are not disadvantaged or unduly affected, including imposing additional licensing conditions on CCI and closely monitoring its transition activities,” Mr Dent said.

“We have proactively reached out to existing policy holders to make sure that they have all the necessary information to continue meeting their obligations under the workers compensation scheme.”

SIRA has contacted 419 identified policyholders to inform them of how and where they can obtain an alternative workers compensation insurance policy.

Alternative policies may be obtained from the Nominal Insurer, icare or Trinity Insurance, who have been granted a specialised insurance licence to provide workers compensation insurance for the Roman Catholic Church and its religious institutions.

The identified policy holders will receive further correspondence this week to ensure they have every opportunity to take out a policy before 29 June 2023.

SIRA will work with the Nominal Insurer and Trinity Insurance to determine which previous CCI policy holders have taken out new policies and will conduct full compliance activities for those employers that have not, including penalties where relevant.
