Woman pleads guilty to workers compensation fraud

A first time offender pleaded guilty to defrauding the workers compensation system of $70,475.21 of which she obtained $38,995.98 herself.

In documents before the court, the offender claimed that she worked for an employer, CityView NSW Pty Ltd, who had taken out two workers compensation insurance policies.

The offender made a claim for a back injury with one of the insurance companies.

The claim was later transferred to the other insurance company.

The offender was never employed by the company and the workplace injury never occurred.

Last week the woman was sentenced to an 18 month imprisonment term, to be served by intensive correction order.

She was also directed to pay compensation in the full amount defrauded of $70,475.21, as well as prosecutor’s costs.

The offender has lodged an appeal against the severity of the sentence.

If you suspect somebody is engaging in workers compensation fraud, report it to SIRA.
