Optimising the value of return to work programs
Why is this important?
Employers have an opportunity to positively influence return to work (RTW) outcomes through effective RTW systems.
All NSW employers must have a RTW program which outlines the systems and processes they will use to support and manage workers with a work-related injury or illness.
RTW programs need to be reviewed at least every 2 years or when something significant changes. It’s important to keep the program up to date to meet your obligations and improve RTW practices.
From the evidence
The workplace RTW program presents an opportunity for an employer to reinforce a positive workplace culture by promoting the health benefits of work, consulting and engaging with their workers and conveying a strong commitment to support them at the first sign of injury.1
What you can do
- Obtain buy-in at all levels of your organisation regarding the importance of RTW.
- Ensure workers are involved in the development of the RTW program.
- Use the checklist in the guidelines to ensure that your RTW program meets requirements.
- Use clear, simple and supportive language.
- Use a variety of methods to ensure all workers are aware of and understand the RTW program.
- Review your program when RTW policies and procedures change or at least every 2 years.
- Consult and communicate any changes.
Ask workers who have recently been through a RTW process for feedback about their experience and what can be improved.
