An update on the Personal Injury Commission from President Gerard Phillips - appointments to date
The Personal Injury Commission (PIC) legislation was passed by the NSW Parliament on 5 August 2020. It was assented to on 11 August with an establishment date of 1 March 2021.
As the current President of the Workers Compensation Commission and inaugural President of the PIC, I have been appointed to undertake the preparatory steps necessary or convenient to facilitate the establishment of the PIC.
Statutory appointments
The following appointments were made on 26 August 2020, pursuant to section 7 of the Personal Injury Commission Act 2020 (the Act) by the Honorable Mark Speakman SC MP, Attorney General and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence:
- President of the PIC – Judge Gerard Phillips
- Division Head – Workers Compensation Division – Mr Rodney Parsons
- Division Head – Motor Accidents Division – Ms Marie Johns
Following my appointment as President of the PIC, I am empowered under s 7 of the PIC Act to take steps before 1 March 2021 to establish the Commission.
Rule Committee appointments
Pursuant to section 19 of the PIC Act, there must be a Rule Committee. The development of the rules is a critical task for the commencement of the PIC and the time between now and 1 March 2021 will go by quickly. To that end, I am pleased to note that I have received the following appointments to the Rule Committee.
I will convene the first meeting of the Rule Committee pursuant to s19(9) of the PIC Act shortly.
